How are you staying sharp over break?

Lovely, lovely winter break. A time to relax and think, to recharge, to be with family and friends, to eat lunch outside of school.

Here's what's keeping me busy (enough) over my break:
- Trying to finish my video project on bandwidth for a masters' class.
- Reading lots of blogs, and keeping up with Classroom2.0 and the new network about education reform, Fireside Learning.
- Spending the many gift cards I received at Barnes and Noble, Circuit City, and iTunes.
- Playing the very fun and addictive iPod game "Brain Challenge" (I'm sure it's in no way a ripoff of any other well-known game). If I ever get a classroom set of iPods I would love to put this game on each one for students to work on during the first few minutes of class.
- Reading about ancient Mesopotamia. What an incredible culture (or series of cultures, since it included the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians ruled during various periods)! Pretty much every element of civilization has its roots in Mesopotamia - codes of law, organized religion, writing, the wheel, urban life...the list goes on and on.
- Thinking about what to do in my classes for the rest of the year.

What are you up to these days?

  1. I am glad you have found something to do over Christmas break. I am sure you have completed your project for class.
I decided it would be a good idea to have a cold over the break, so I would not feel like doing anything. However, I have been cleaning my "work space" sorting through old bills and getting ready for tax season!!!
Thanks for the tip on the iPod game. I have already downloaded it. It will help me to put off doing anything of importance.

  2. Gxeremio, I've never read your blog before but I'm glad to have found it. I'm really quite intrigued. And I'm enjoying the new questions to bring to my attention, particularly regarding children, education, and society. Anyway, reading some of your past posts reminds of me this book I finally just started reading this month. Although I'm not very far through it - on page 50 out of 600 - I thought maybe you'd be interested in it too, and maybe you've already read it: "The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman. Take care!

  4. Today we removed the wallpaper from our dining room and then I finished sewing the window treatments for our breakfast room. Next I read two articles on phonological awareness and phonics in preparation for an online class I will be facilitating. Next I established a blogline for myself in order to expedite the many websites and news I try to look at each day on the computer. Last, I visited your blog :) Whew! Time for me to watch a little "I Love Lucy" to keep me sharp!
