Data visualization in education

If you're a news junky like I am, you've certainly become aware of the increase in interactive tools on news websites. These types of data visualizations are becoming more common, and are coming to be more about the content of the data than the whiz-bang technology behind the tools (as it should be). The New York Times has a neat Vizlab, and I couldn't even count the number of times I used the interactive data viz tools on CNN during the recent election cycle.

I'm putting the finishing touches on a final paper for one of my classes, and it's got me thinking about how schools do (and how they should) use graphic representations to communicate content. What are some cool experiences you've had with data visualizations, as a teacher, student, or lifelong learner? What still needs to be developed or improved upon?
